Press release: Best Friends Animal Society

Best Friends Animal Society’s pet food pantry was honored to be the beneficiary of a pet food drive that took place earlier this month at Smith’s in Salt Lake City, Utah. Trisha Yearwood Pet Collection partnered with Smith’s and Best Friends Animal Society to help make this wonderful event happen.

In addition to the more than 700 pounds of dry cat and dog food, and nearly 200 cans of pet food donated by kind visitors at the pet food drive, Trisha Yearwood Pet Collection donated 500 pounds of Trisha Yearwood Dog Food, and Smith’s matched that donation.

Trisha Yearwood made a personal appearance at the food drive and posed for photos and presented Best Friends’ chief mission officer Holly Sizemore with a generous $3,000 donation to support the pet food pantry. She also visited with two adorable adoptable dogs, Primrose and Amity. Primrose, the chunky lowrider pit bull mix, was even adopted by someone who came to make a donation to the event.

All donations to the pet food drive will go to the pet food pantry run by Best Friends Lifesaving Center in Salt Lake City, which offers support to local pet owners in the community who are struggling financially, including a meals-on-wheels type program to distribute food, litter, toys, kennels and other supplies to people’s homes.

“Sometimes a bag of pet food makes all the difference between keeping a dog or cat at home, or someone having to make the agonizing decision to relinquish their pet to a shelter,” said Sizemore. “We are so grateful to Trisha Yearwood Pet Collection and Smith’s for their incredibly kind donations to our pet food pantry.”

In 2021, BFAS distributed over 110,000 pounds of pet food in Salt Lake City. Best Friends’ pet food pantry was established in January 2014, to provide residents with emergency assistance to help them avoid giving up their pets due to a temporary financial crisis.

Best Friends Animal Society is the leading animal welfare organization working to end the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters by 2025. Founded in 1984, Best Friends is a pioneer in the no-kill movement and has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters from an estimated 17 million per year to around 355,000. Best Friends runs lifesaving programs across the country, as well as the nation’s largest no-kill animal sanctuary.
