Bentonville, Ark. – Paw print–shaped vegan chocolates are on the way from PETA to Walmart, which removed dog-breeding immobilizing stands from its website after PETA pointed out that the metal devices, also known as “rape racks,” are used to restrain female dogs so that they can’t fight back as they’re mounted by males.

“To a breeder, a mother dog is nothing more than a puppy-making machine to be used over and over until her body gives out,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “Nobody has any business breeding more dogs into a world already bursting at the seams with homeless ones, and Walmart’s decision to stop selling these despicable racks sets an example of compassion and responsibility for other retailers to follow.”

Around 70 million dogs and cats are homeless in the U.S. at any given time, and breeders exacerbate this crisis by producing additional litters of animals. Many animal shelters—under pressure to avoid euthanasia at all costs—are turning dogs away when they inevitably reach capacity, leaving the most vulnerable animals with nowhere to go. Many end up abandoned on the streets, where they may be hit by cars, infected with diseases, or hurt by cruel people. That’s why PETA asks everyone to adopt instead of buying from breeders or pet stores and advises guardians to have their animal companions spayed or neutered.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org, listen to The PETA Podcast, or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
