Tarboro, N.C.PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the starvation of three dogs found dead by the roadside just outside Tarboro town limits on New Year’s Day.

Around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, a woman reported finding three dead dogs—two light brown, one black—on the west shoulder of Baker Street Extension, near the intersection with Daniel Street and adjacent to a sand pit. Part of the snout and lower jaw was missing from one of the two smooth-haired, tan-colored dogs, and the eyes had sunken into the head of the other. All were wearing heavy, thick collars. Photos are available here. (Warning: graphic images.)

The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating but has yet to identify a suspect, so PETA is asking the public to help crack the case.

“These dogs’ prominent ribs and hipbones tell of just a fraction of their long-term suffering,” says PETA Director Heather Carlson. “Other animals in the culprit’s custody could be in grave danger, and PETA urges anyone with information to come forward right away.”

Tipsters should contact the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Unit at 252-641-7911.
