Los Angeles – The vegan Stella McCartney Cowboy Boots worn by Alicia Silverstone in her recent anti-leather campaign for PETA are being put up for auction along with a signed copy of the naked ad, courtesy of Charitybuzz. Silverstone wore the boots—and nothing else—in a striking, sky-high message above Times Square.

All proceeds from the boots’ sale will support PETA’s work, including its efforts to stamp out the cruel and environmentally harmful leather industry and encourage everyone to embrace vegan leathers made from the prickly pear cactus, mushrooms, apples, and other innovative materials.

“Stella McCartney’s gorgeous inlaid Cowboy Boots were made for walking and for protecting vulnerable cows and the planet,” says PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange. “PETA looks forward to seeing a die-hard Alicia Silverstone fan score these icon-approved boots that represent the future of fashion.”

Cows used for leather typically endure castration, branding, and tail docking—all without painkillers—before they’re violently killed. Leather production also kills Mother Earth: Cow leather has nearly 10 times the negative environmental impact and contributes more to global warming, water pollution and depletion, and greenhouse gas emissions than the production of plant-based leathers.

PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear”—opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org, listen to The PETA Podcast, or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
