A ban on snares in Wales via the Agriculture (Wales) Bill is progressing well, having passed Stage 3 of the process.

Despites efforts by some members of the Senedd to derail the snares ban by calling them ‘humane cable restraints’, the Minister for Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths, has stood firm on the commitment to ban these cruel, outdated devices.

At Stage 3 of the Agriculture Bill, which took place on 16 May 2023, those opposed to a ban on snares once again tried to table amendments to the Bill to allow the ‘Licensed use of humane cable restraints’ (that’s snares to you and me!).

For the second time during the Bill’s recent progress, Minister Lesley Griffiths opposed those amendments and, the resulting vote saw the majority of Members vote against the proposed amendments.

This is terrific news and means that the ban on snares in Wales is progressing well.

Says Iain Green, Director of Animal Aid: “We are delighted that the Welsh Government is leading the way on banning snares. These cruel, outdated traps cause hideous suffering and death to animals and are entirely indiscriminate.”
